Allow me to break this into a more digestible format.

  • Dad: I am the proud father of a wonderful daughter, Isabella Sunshine. She is the brightest light in my life, illuminating each day with her presence. Everything I do is inspired by her; she is at the heart of all my actions and decisions. In Isabella, I see the best parts of myself reflected. She is not just my child; she is the embodiment of my love, my hopes, and my dreams. Her happiness and well-being are my foremost priorities, and she continues to be the driving force behind my endeavors, both personally and professionally. In essence, Isabella is more than just my daughter; she is the guiding star of my life’s journey.
  • Dreamer: As a dreamer, my journey in the United States spans over 25 years, with a significant part of that time living as an undocumented immigrant. These ten years, while undocumented, were not just a phase but a formative experience that profoundly influenced who I am today. I wear this part of my history with pride, recognizing the strength and resilience it has instilled in me. The term “Dreamer” is intimately connected to the DREAM Act, a legislative proposal championed by President Barack Obama, aimed at supporting undocumented immigrants. Though I was eligible for this aid, I initially hesitated to embrace it, unsure of its implications. My journey taught me that it’s okay to make mistakes and to learn from them. Embracing the term “Dreamer” in my own way, I echo the ethos of “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” However, I did create my own term, “Once undocumented, always undocumented”.It symbolizes a permanent transformation, a deep-rooted identity that remains with me regardless of my legal status. I will make a publication about this soon. This experience of being undocumented has endowed me with unique insights and perspectives. One key concept I’ve identified is what I call “UNDIAGNOSED UNDOCUMENTED PTSD,” a phenomenon often unnoticed but prevalent among undocumented individuals, and continues with those that manage to legalize their status. This understanding is crucial in the context of healthcare, especially when providing services to the Hispanic community. In summary, the dreamer in me is not just a title; it’s a testament to my journey, challenges, and the unyielding spirit of resilience. It informs my approach to healthcare, emphasizing empathy, understanding, and tailored care for those who share similar backgrounds.
  • Entrepreneur: As an entrepreneur with a deep-rooted immigrant background, I’ve always felt that we carry a spirit of entrepreneurship within us. This trait was vividly brought to life in my own journey when I faced a significant challenge: being denied healthcare due to my undocumented status. This experience sparked the creation of Unividoc, a health tech venture designed to aid those who faced similar obstacles. Unividoc is a telehealth platform fully in Spanish, linking our community with culturally understanding, Spanish-speaking doctors. This Unividoc venture wasn’t just about language, but about valuing and integrating our culture into healthcare. While there’s much I could say about Unividoc, I’ll save more insights for a future issue of our newsletter, focusing on how this experience has fueled other innovative projects, such as Univicoin, Univimeds, UniviRx, and Univicould.
  • Healthcare professional: My career in healthcare spans many years and various roles. I began as a project manager, evolved into a program manager, took the leap into founding my own initiatives, and now serve as the Director of Telehealth. Through each of these stages, my guiding principle has been a steadfast commitment to my personal mission: making healthcare accessible and friendly to the Hispanic community. My journey has equipped me with a wealth of experience and insights, particularly in understanding and addressing the unique needs of Hispanic patients. If you are working on a healthcare project aimed at this demographic, I am more than willing to offer my assistance. My goal is to ensure that healthcare solutions are not only effective but also culturally sensitive and inclusive. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if my experience and knowledge can support your endeavors in making healthcare Hispanic-friendly.

Why I Started Healthcare Tacos

I created Healthcare Tacos as a bridge. A bridge between healthcare professionals and the vibrant Hispanic culture, a bridge that carries voices often unheard, and a bridge that connects knowledge with action. I believe that understanding and respecting cultural nuances is not just important – it’s essential for compassionate and effective healthcare.
